Cyanobacterial classification

Dear readers,

The cyanobacterial classification is really interesting. This gives us the idea of nomenclature and 

the position of the organism. There is a debate over the years for naming and classifying the 

Spirulina, some of the researchers say it should be named as Spirulina platensis  and others 

opinion is Arthrospira platenisis, very recently majority of the researchers consider that the 

later one is more suitable.

Cyanobacterial photosynthesis

Dear readers, this post deals with cyanobacterial photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis represents a unique process of sunlight energy conversion. In this process, inorganic compounds and light energy are converted to organic matter by photoaototrophs . Vitually all forms of life on planet Earth depend directly or indirectly on photosynthesis as a sorce of energy for their metabolism and growth.
The earliest photoautotrophic organisms, anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, evolved 3.5 billion years ago. They use light energy to extract protons and electrons from a variety of donor molecules, to reduce carbon dioxide to form organic molecules. Our focus is on oxygen producing photosynthetic microorganisms: prokaryotic cyanobacteris and eukaryotic algae, which emerged later and created our oxygeneous atmosphere on earth.

Caynobacterial Phycocyanin

Cyanobacteria synthesizes phycobiliproteins e.g phycoerythrin, phycocyanin (PC), allophycocyanin(APC). Phycocyanin is a blue coloured pigment and has got vivid applications in various industries such as cosmetics,pharmaceutical,food. It is generally been used as a natural colouring agent. But recent studies of researchers worldwide revealed its therapeutic properties. This novel protein has tremendous biotechnological applications. The production of phycocyanin has been commercialised due to it's vivid applications and economic imortance.
