Dear readers, this post deals with cyanobacterial photosynthesis.Photosynthesis represents a unique process of sunlight energy conversion. In this process, inorganic compounds and light energy are converted to organic matter by photoaototrophs . Vitually all forms of life on planet Earth depend directly or indirectly on photosynthesis as a sorce of energy for their metabolism and growth.
The earliest photoautotrophic organisms, anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, evolved 3.5 billion years ago. They use light energy to extract protons and electrons from a variety of donor molecules, to reduce carbon dioxide to form organic molecules. Our focus is on oxygen producing photosynthetic microorganisms: prokaryotic cyanobacteris and eukaryotic algae, which emerged later and created our oxygeneous atmosphere on earth.
